Negative gender-role stereotypes continue to pervade the careers of many women. The current study examines the careers of female National Health Service (NHS) nurses in the United Kingdom. The article focuses on the characteristics of prior work experience and their relationship with effective socialization. Hypotheses were tested using survey data from 131 college graduates participating in a Career Development Program. The findings provide insight into the dynamics of prior work experience and effective socialization, however, they raise questions regarding the “benefits” of prior work experience.
