Abstract

The ancient doctrine of the Five Elements (also called phases, essences or stages) is an important part of the Chinese cultural heritage: merging the wisdom and life experience of our ancestors, it is a reflection of Chinese culture that certainly has practical value and completeness. As a traditional Chinese color theory, the Five-Elements- Theory discusses the harmonious relations and interactions of heaven, earth and humans: the concept involved is based on five colors with each of them related to one of the five elements blue/green (wood), red (fire), yellow (earth), white (metal) and black (water). Every element stands for certain qualities which connote to natural phenomena. By watching the natural environment, people learned about natural substances and their mutually supportive or destructive influence. By applying this color-based knowledge of natural phenomena to their daily life, people of the traditional Chinese societies constantly strove to improve and adjust their life standards. But how does it comply with life in modern societies?

  1. Introduction

The Five-Elements-Theory partly dates back to as early as 1600 BCE. It discusses the harmonious relations and interactions of heaven, earth and human beings, providing a coherent and systematic approach to understand and interpret nature and its interdependent processes of creation and decay. Starting with the threefold structure of the universe in Chinese philosophy, the three spheres of origin,三才(San Cai), which are 天(Tian) heaven, plusmn;也(Di) earth, and 人 (Ren) human beings, are interconnected by universal powers generating creative and destructive impact. Central to this structure is the idea of the 道(Dao), literally meaning “way” or “path”: Man

follows the principle of earth / ground; earth follows the principle of heaven; heaven follows the principle of nature. As the Dao is effective by generating Yin and Yang, the two principle cosmic energies, which are complementary, inseparable, and in balance with each other, through these binary universal forces, the five elements are brought in being:

Destructive Cycle:

ai—Productive Cycle;

-Creation

-Disturbance

Each of the elements is associated with one of the five colors: Black (water), White (Metal), Blue-Green (Wood), Red (Fire) and Yellow (Earth). The five elements interact in two different mechanisms: mutually productive and

destructive: In the productive way, Water feeds Wood, Wood nourishes Fire, from Fire generates Earth, from Earth generates Metal, from Metal generates Water. In the destructive way Metal cuts Wood, Wood exhausts Earth, Earth stops Water, Water extinguishes Fire, and Fire melts Metal. The five elements transcend all life condi

the seasons, perception, the physical body etc. They are supposed to have innate qualities that correspond to nature, human life and the physical body.

  1. Color as a psychophysical interface

In the Five-Elements-Theory, color serves as an interface between the realms of human beings (perception), nature (phenomena) and the universe (physical energies). In a three-dimensional model placing Yang at the peak and Yin at the bottom, all elements and the two universal powers are interconnected:

Yang

Figure 2: Five Elements interactive relations (3D)

In this model, the different qualities of the elements are linked on a definite scale: color can thus be related to taste, and to shape, and all other equivalents. In this visual model, a single point can be calculated along the scales, and defined by a range of different attributes, e.g. a pale blue would taste slightly pungent, and evoke a perception of dryness, or a dark red might be associated with warm moisture, and an agitated feeling.

Modern study found that colors can be perceived as geometrical forms which can in turn be allocated a distinctive position within a three- dimensional color model: Based on Bauhaus studies on synaesthesia (Itten, Kandinsky), red would be perceived as a square, blue as a circle, and yellow as a triangle. Through metamorphosis, the red square will become a yellow triangle or a blue circle. The 3D-model of the Five-Elements- Theory is a practical tool linking everyday experience to a clearly defined scale.

  1. The Five-Elements-Theory as a modern tool

Linking 3D-models to the Five-Elements- Theory enters the realms of the nowadays prevailing positive sciences, and it is perfectly worth discussing if methods of modern sciences can prove this traditional, but dynamic color theory. If the Five-Elements-Theory can be systemized, generalized, and enter legitimate objective verification, then this would contribute to a new kind of system building based on ideas of cultural heritage. In fact, by applying modern measures it can produce more beneficial knowledge and rules for peoplersquo;s lives that will help to make our lives more comfortable and happier.

This article strives to verify the traditional doctrine of the Five Elements by an empirical approach. It explains its color concept, its traditional applications and assumed limitat
