Mockumentary

A call to play

Craig Hight

Mockumentary is now a staple of contemporary fictional narrative. From archetypal film texts such as David Holzmanrsquo;s Diary (US, 1967), This is Spinal Tap (US, 1984) and Crsquo;est arriveacute; pregrave;s de chez vous (Man Bites Dog) (Belgium, 1992) through to the television series The Office (UK, 2001–3), the form has demonstrated a popularity and, on occasions, a sophistication that suggest that it deserves to be acknowledged as one of the more robust and certainly more interesting documentary hybrids.1

An initial definition of mockumentary might focus largely on the text itself, defining the form as consisting of those fictional texts which employ a sustained appropriation of documentary codes and conventions. In these terms, mockumentary is little more than a lsquo;parasiticrsquo; form. At another level the form appears to offer an inherent reflexivity towards documentary (and by extension all non-fiction forms) through demonstrating how easy it is to fake documentary modes of representation. And yet most examples of mockumentary do not develop a clear critique or commentary of documentary forms, and for many audiences mockumentary is more easily labelled as lsquo;playfulrsquo; rather than subversive.

The discussion below provides a more comprehensive definition of mockumen-tary before moving to consider cross-platform mockumentary, that is those texts which operate simultaneously across a number of media platforms. The emergence of cross-platform mockumentary is a feature associated particularly with the increasing dominance of digital media platforms such as the world wide web and DVD. These mockumentaries suggest both a continuity of mockumentary into digital media, and the increasingly complex nature of mockumentary discourse within the contempo-rary mediascape.

Defining mockumentary discourse2

A useful starting point for defining mockumentary is Nicholsrsquo; three-part definition of documentary (Nichols 1991: 12–31). There is not the space here to do full justice to his arguments, but Nichols has proposed that documentary constitutes a genre that needs to be defined, first, through reference to an institutional practice developed and maintained by a lsquo;community of practitionersrsquo;, a practice that claims to represent reality to audiences in as accurate, objective and unbiased a manner as possible.

Second, documentary can be defined through reference to a specific lsquo;corpus of textsrsquo; which collectively demonstrate a familiar set of codes and conventions. These codes and conventions are typically grouped as documentary modes of representation (with the key modes being expository, observational, and interactive or participatory). Each of these modes is centred on specific forms of representing the social-historical world, and are couched within wider discourses which support their presentation of various forms of lsquo;evidencersquo; of reality. The interactive mode, for example, focuses particularly on forms of testimony from social actors and expert knowledge from representatives of institutional discourses, while the observational mode relies on the common-sensical belief in a camerarsquo;s ability to capture footage which bears an indexical link to reality itself. Third, Nichols argues that documentary necessarily involves a lsquo;constitu-ency of viewersrsquo; who bring specific expectations and assumptions to their reading of documentary forms. Here audiences typically engage with these texts through a documentary mode of reading which is based on a familiarity with and acceptance of the validity and integrity of these generic modes of representation.

Nichols recognized the need for this three-part definition of documentary because of the slippage which occurs between the levels of production, transmission and reception within media practice. For example, a given text can entail forms of representation outside of the conventional modes of documentary but still be identified and accepted by audience as lsquo;documentaryrsquo;, if it is recognized as the application of the institutionalized code of practice of documentary filmmakers. This three-part definition also explains the damage done to the genre by fake documenta-ries. A fake documentary entails a pretence of documentary practice beginning with the fraudulent intentions of the filmmakers. It represents a deliberate lapse in standards for documentary proper, and is judged on those terms by audiences and other documentary practitioners. Fake documentaries are by definition a very differ-ent order of text from mockumentary.

Adapting Nicholsrsquo; definition of the documentary genre, mockumentary can be defined as a discourse, one identified through reference to three levels of media practice:

  1. Mockumentary arises from a variety of agendas on the part of fictional media producers. It draws in particular on parodic and satiric traditions, but is not reducible to these.
  2. At the textual level, mockumentary appropriates styles not only from the codes and conventions of documentary proper but from the full spectrum of non-fiction media, including hybrid forms. And mockumentary dis-course operates within a range of generic traditions (including, surprisingly, non-fiction itself) and potentially intersects with all forms of media.
  3. And mockumentary is capable of providing a complexity of forms of audience engagement, often (but not necessarily) involving different senses of reflexivity towards the non-fiction and hybrid forms which it appropri-ates.

It is at the interaction between these three levels of practice that mockumentary is located.

Craig Hight

NS,M.A.S.H.
