We integrated the determinant persuasive messages of microfilms with the elaboration likelihood model to examine consumersrsquo; affective and cognitive attitude change and purchase intention. Participants were 316 Taiwanese consumers who had seen “House of Little Moments,” a successful microfilm marketing campaign in Taiwan. The empirical results of confirmatory factory analysis with structural equation modeling revealed that argument quality predicted cognitive responses and story plot predicted affective responses; celebrity effect and microfilm popularity had positive effects on both affective and cognitive responses; and purchase intention was affected by both cognitive and affective responses, with affective responses having the stronger effect. These results imply that the extent of consumersrsquo; emotional reaction to persuasive messages has a particularly important influence on purchase intention in story-based advertising. Therefore, understanding the effect of persuasive messages in microfilm marketing is essential for both advertisers and marketers.

Keywords: microfilm advertising, advertising popularity, argument quality, story plot, celebrity effect, purchase intention, attitude change.

In a new-media environment, marketers need to find innovative approaches to engage consumers, as traditional mass media advertising channels like television commercials are declining in popularity (Belch amp; Belch, 2014). Microfilm advertising, an online marketing technique for branded entertainment, has become increasingly popular in recent years among product and service advertisers in Chinese-speaking areas such as Taiwan (Chen, 2015). Microfilms have a short duration, varying from 30 seconds to 15 minutes, so that viewers can watch these on their mobile device anywhere. The low production cost and use of social network platforms for publication of microfilms (Shao, Li, Morrison, amp; Wu, 2016) allow marketers to reach a wider audience than is possible through mass media advertising (Xie, 2016; Yu amp; Chang, 2013). Well-known brands including BMW, Samsung, and Sony have received an enthusiastic response to their microfilm advertising (Sun, 2015). For example, after their microfilm marketing campaign began, BMW saw their 2001 sales numbers increase 12% from the previous year, and their short movies were viewed over 11 million times in 4 months (Hespos, 2002). Therefore, there is a need to understand the various persuasive messages of microfilms that influence consumersrsquo; attitudes and behaviors.

However, microfilm advertising is still underused by some companies. Further, stories form the heart of the microfilm, and their quality can be improved (Delgado-Ballester amp; Fernaacute;ndez-Sabiote, 2016). Per narrative transportation theory (Green amp; Brock, 2000), story plot is fundamental to narrative transportation as it can affect receiversrsquo; attitudes, intentions, and behaviors (Escalas, 2004; Moisio amp; Arnould, 2005). Other story-based features, such as character, may also influence the quality of a story as an appealing presenter with a compelling message can easily arouse the consumer–brand connection and move individuals to action, such as seeking further information about the product or service and making an actual purchase (Pera amp; Viglia, 2016); thus, using celebrities in microfilms has become a trend (Escalas amp; Bettman, 2015). Moreover, according to the elaboration likelihood model (ELM; Petty amp; Cacioppo, 1986), the arguments of the message primarily affect receiversrsquo; attitudes through central processing routes (Petty amp; Cacioppo, 2012). Further, persuasive features, such as the popularity of the message presenter, may positively affect the processing of a message due to network externalities (Song, Parry, amp; Kawakami, 2009).

Microfilm advertising has gained popularity in recent years among product and service marketers in Asia, and YouTube in Taiwan has even established a microfilm channel (Chen, 2015; Chen amp; Chang, 2017). It is, therefore, critical for academic researchers and firms to understand consumersrsquo; responses to this advertising strategy. Understanding its specific persuasive messages and mechanisms will help marketers to advertise more effectively and stimulate consumersrsquo; buying desires. Therefore, we examined the persuasive effectiveness of microfilms to provide a systematic understanding of how argument quality, microfilm popularity, story plot, and celebrity effect influence consumersrsquo; elaboration process.

Literature Review and Hypotheses

Elaboration Likelihood Model

The ELM elucidates attitude changes through central and peripheral processing routes, which differ in terms of the amount of cognitive elaboration involved (Petty amp; Cacioppo, 1986). The central route involves carefully scrutinizing task-related information and requires extensive cognitive effort, whereas the peripheral route involves focusing, albeit without any extensive effort, on the environmental characteristics related to the information (Petty amp; Cacioppo, 2012). Although usersrsquo; initial elaboration state can be employed as a proxy for central versus peripheral route processing, such elaboration may change over time (Zhou, Lu, amp; Wang, 2016). However, we did not develop formal hypotheses about the temporal persistence effects because our data were insufficient to adequately validate whether individualsrsquo; elaboration process changed during our study. Instead, we conducted an exploratory empirical test of these effects. Furthermore, per Li (2013), we operationalized affective responses
