Abstract— Through researching the ECG wireless monitoring technology, this paper designs a portable wireless ECG monitor. This system is controlled by MSP430 single chip computer, which amplifies and filters the patientyuml;s ECG signals and sends data to central controller with ZigBee wireless transmission module. Central controller displays the ECG signals. It implements the real time acquisition and short distance transmission of ECG data. This system is very portable, low power, real time and intelligent. It can use in home healthcare, community healthcare

  1. INTRODUCTION

Electrocardiograph (ECG) is one of the basic human physiology electrical signals. The ECG signal reflects the humanrsquo;s heart activities and therefore can be used to diagnose the heart state and its disease. Besides the hospital, the application of ECG monitor appears in the different fields. Home healthcare, community healthcare and sport training have the urgent and new requirements to use ECG monitor [1- 3]. How to wear by person conveniently, how to capture the ECGs quickly and easily, and how to send to central controller are new problems and missions the biomedical departments and engineering must meet and solve.

In recent years, with the fast development of computer and communication technology, the information technology has been widely applied in each aspect of society .Combination information technology and communication technology with medical device make it is possible to achieve a kind of remote wireless ECG monitor. This paper gives an example on a portable wireless ECG monitor, which designed on the microprocessor MSP430FG439 and based on the on-chip ZigBee wireless network.

  1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

The monitor system composes of two parts, monitor terminal and central controller, shown as Figure 1.

ECG monitor terminal is worn by the person. ECG signal can be picked through the electrode, and then amplified and filter by the analogue circuits. Main process unit is MSP430, which finishes analog signal to digital signal conversion, digital

filter and calculates the heart rate [4]. At the same time,

MSP430 sends all the processed data to ZigBee wireless module, which transmits data through 2.4GHz channel.

Lastly central controller receives the ECG data and then displays or stores them. The central controller is constituted by the wireless receiver and central PC. They can receive health parameters and make unified database management and information display. ZigBee receiver network could receive one point or multi-points information [5]. Figure 1 shows a kind of point to point communication system.

  1. DESIGN OF MONITOR TERMINAL

The main function of monitor terminal is collection and procession of weak ECG signal, which begin from the electrode worn by the person with the device. The other hardware of monitor terminal composes of three main parts [6]: analog amplifier and filter, MCU MSP430 and wireless transmitter shown as Figure 2.

The process of these three units begins with the weak ECG signal collected on electrode. The pre-amplifier is made of CMOS instrumentation amplifier INA321. The gain is 5. There is a 50Hz filter following the pre-amplifier, which eliminate 50Hz interference effectively. The internal operational amplifier of MSP430FG439 conducts the majority ration of amplification. It has the gain of 100. The total gain is 500.The amplitude of ECG is high enough to implement AD convert ion. The data can be sent wirelessly to central controller after the 12-bit converter and digital filter. The digital filter which is carried out by software program eliminates the high frequency interference.
